The Surrender Collective

/ðə,ðɪ,ðiː səˈrɛndə kəˈlɛktɪv/

a collective of out-of-the-ordinary creative individuals

Surrender is proud to present our latest side project—The Surrender Collective—an initiative that endeavours to bring together and highlight up-and-coming, under-the-radar creative individuals who bring something different, fresh and exciting to the community. At Surrender, we are all about cultivating our artistic eco-system; co-existing together harmoniously and helping one another grow in support, aspiration and mutual respect.

In this current day and age, with the inane amount of content being churned out daily on the Internet and social media, we want to take a stance on it—working alongside fellow talented creatives to create original content with purpose. We often get requests from our photographer and stylist friends who need loan support for their photoshoots, or personalities who need wardrobe styling, so we figured, let’s get together and make it something better; keep our channels open to whatever and watch the magic that happens after—and that’s how The Surrender Collective came to be.

For the first installment, we team up with Singaporean photographer, Stuart Chen.

Graduating from London’s College of Fashion and RMIT University, Stuart has racked up quite an extensive list of commercial and editorial work in his resume, having been featured in notable publications such as Fashion Journal Magazine, Folkr, Vulture and Fucking Young!, Chen cites the work of Irving Penn, Peter Lindbergh and Christiane Spangsberg as some of his main inspiration that has influenced his craft and photography style.

Check out these editorials that were produced in collaboration with Stuart for Surrender: QUIET SENSES, THE HOBBYIST

We speak to Stuart to find out more about what lies behind his calm, cool and quiet demeanor.

If you could be any animal, what would you be?

SC: I would like to be a bird, so that I can have a bird’s eye view and perspective on things.

How do you choose your photography subjects?

SC: A proper and honest conversation would be great; that’s how I would determine if I am interested or not.

Who is the one person—dead or alive— right on top of your list of people to photograph?

SC: It would either be Alexander McQueen, Marcel Duchamp or Damien Hirst—I can’t decide.

Dream camera setup?

SC: It would literally be just a camera.

What would your last meal be?

SC: Hopefully it would be whatever my mom would want to prepare.

If we looked into your Spotify account, what would we find?

SC: It would be an array of genres; basically, playlists for shoots and different occasions.

One talent you wished you had?

SC: I wished I had the talent to translate my ideas into words better.

Favourite karaoke song to jam out to?

SC: Anything by Coldplay.

Your top 5 movies that everyone should watch?

SC: The Dreamers, Nocturnal Animals, Saving Private Ryan, Interstellar and The Talented Mr. Ripley.

The world would be a better place if…

SC: We were kinder to one another.
