13th March 2017, Singapore – Surrender launched an exclusive capsule collection in collaboration with Los Angeles based artists DRx Romanelli and Cali Thornhill DeWitt with a meet-and-greet in store party on 9th March 2017. This also served as its official opening celebration since its relocation to 268 Orchard Road, as it takes on a new concept and focus on art and lifestyle to complement the curation of luxury streetwear brands.
Leading up to the event, a pre-launch campaign shoot was conducted as a teaser. Shot by photographer Christina Paik in Paris, it featured a series of 3 robes with the letter ‘X’ on the back, giving the audience a little snippet of what to expect from the collection. The capsule collection comprises of 9 one-of-a-kind reversible jackets (spelling out S-U-R-R-E-N-D-E-R), tee shirts, a zine with patches and a set of triptych textile artworks.
DRx Romanelli and Cali Thornhill Dewitt describe the jackets as a fun, colorful collection inspired by an East meets West concept that was well presented through their selection of textiles as they mixed segments of fabric from vintage Chinese robes and classic American jumpers from Romanelli’s personal archive of vintage pieces. The jackets were then finished off with contrastingly bold, white hand painted letters by Cali, executed in his signature style - with vibrant graphics and juxtaposed bold text. With all the intricate detailing and fusion of creativity between both artists, the jackets each stand as a classic work of art on its own.
The tee shirts, zine, patches and triptych textile artworks saw the integration of floral and greenery graphics that is distinctively recognizable as Cali’s style of work.
With an upbeat set by Linda Hao on the decks, guests were also treated to champagne as they explored the jackets displayed against the clean white interiors of Surrender’s seasonal corner, emphasizing the boutique design goal to highlight art and installations in a neutral space. Notable guests and celebrities who attended the event included Mediacorp artistes Ethen Lee and Julie Tan, Singer Tabitha Nauser, Aarika Lee, Model Fiona Fussi, Homegrown rapper Kevin Lester & Mean XS. Fashion faces Debbie Kate, Mae Tan, Darren Loke and Nicole Wong were also present alongside industry insiders and art lovers. This collection launch sets the positioning and tone for future artist collaborative works to look forward to from Surrender.
