In 1975, Lizzy Mercier Descloux dropped out of art school in Paris and moved to New York to partake in its punk scene, romance Richard Hell, befriend Patti Smith and preside over no wave. Her first solo LP, Press Color, was matchless in showcasing her minimalist punk/funk chops and setting a precedence for the likes of DNA and Contortions. Her later stuff was also key in kicking off worldbeat. But for her punk substance x East Village style, check her cover of “You Give Me Fever”, where she replaces every instance of “fever” with “tumour”. Why? Because!
