David Bowie, by Geoff MacCormack: “I feel some guilt in as much as I turned him on to the Gitane cigarette he’s lighting. In my defence (and his) we did smoke this brand for aesthetic reasons – the delightful artwork on the packet by M. Ponty is of a gypsy dancer in a plume of smoke.”
Geoff got to accompany Bowie on his assorted tours (Diamond Dogs to Young Americans) and projects (The Man Who Fell To Earth) from 1973 to 1976. He is a lucky man. See the fruits of his travels in From Station To Station: Travels With Bowie on Genesis Publications, purveyors of lush, heavy-weight, limited edition pictorials that look as good as they feel.
Zabrieskie Point is getting a release on DVD. It’s Michelangelo Antonioni’s almost-there counter-cultural statement from 1970 that probably stands up more as a bizarre cultural relic than for any kind of cinematic merit. It bombed spectacularly and in fact, its back story made for better headlines. But check this bit where Daria Halprin blows stuff up with her mind, set to chilling Pink Floyd music (“Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up”), and it could just be the best worst thing Antonioni ever did.

Finally. The wild and wonderful story of The Slits is now available on paper. Zoe Street Howe was responsible for this one, for which she’s spoken to people like Keith Levene, Don Letts, Dennis Bovell (who produced Cut), all four members of The Slits and other key characters. She also displays a vital and warm understanding of what exactly made The Slits so special: their kookiness and candor, their sense of adventure and their inventive sound.
Here’s them doing their reggae-punk best on Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” – a fantastic, fantastic cover.

“Their real potency lies in their freedom of thought, their creativity, and the determination they had to go their own way and be themselves without playing up to ideals, to try new things bravely and joyously, with humour and a sense of fun, as opposed to anger. Anger is an energy, of course, as John Lydon would say, but it’s refreshing to also see the honesty, oddness and sheer glee these people had in experimenting musically without fear of judgment, the result would always be their own sound, which often sounded as if it had come from space as much as it did the streets of west London.” – Zoe Street Howe
